Maureen is a barrister specialising in commercial and employment law. She brings a wealth of knowledge to her practice from her work and studies in international economic law across three jurisdictions: England & Wales; the United States (New York and Washington, DC); and the European Union.
Having grown up in Barbados and worked for several years in the Embassy to Washington, DC, she has also acquired a functional knowledge of Caribbean and international laws and policy.
Commercial Law
Maureen holds a commercial practice that consists of a mixture of advisory, ADR and litigation work.
She's able to apply her legal knowledge and analytical skills to almost any industry, backed by a diverse career background, but maintains a special interest in SMEs operating in the creative sector and their associated agreements and disputes.
Maureen also accepts instructions in relation to commercial contracts and data protection and privacy matters.
Background
After qualifying as a barrister, Maureen secured practical experience of employment advisory and advocacy work with a Central London firm of solicitors and the Free Representation Unit.
Shortly afterwards, she joined a US firm in Washington, DC as an adviser in English and European law, while assisting with multiparty litigation in the DC Superior Court, the US Federal Court of Claims and the Southern District of New York.
She provided European law support in litigation involving parallel imports on behalf of a multinational fashion house and became the key European law adviser to the Antitrust (Competition) Law department when the largest client acquired subsidiaries in Holland.
Before qualifying at the Bar, Maureen worked across a wide range of commercial sectors including advertising, broadcasting, couture fashion, cosmetics, publishing, hairdressing, retail sales, oil and gas, travel, property management, accountancy, multinational treasury functions, investment banking and public relations.
During her career break, Maureen worked in the City (two investment banks) and comes to practice by way of the Advocate Panel where she handled Commercial and Chancery cases.
Maureen also speaks French and Spanish.
