Managing Emotional Wellbeing During a Divorce

Going through a divorce is one of the most challenging experiences anyone can face. The emotional rollercoaster, coupled with the practical upheavals, can leave anyone feeling lost and overwhelmed.  

Thankfully, there are a number of ways to manage your mental and emotional wellbeing throughout the divorce process. Here are just a few…  

Acknowledge Your Feelings 

Divorce can bring a flood of emotions, from anger and sadness to relief and guilt. It’s crucial to acknowledge these feelings rather than suppressing them. Bottling up emotions can lead to increased stress and long-term emotional issues. 

Talk to a trusted friend or family member about how you’re feeling. Sometimes, simply verbalising your emotions can provide immense relief. Writing in a journal can also be a therapeutic way to process your thoughts and feelings. 

Take Care of Your Physical Health 

Taking care of your physical health is just as important as tending to your emotional well-being during a divorce. Physical health and mental health are closely interconnected, and neglecting one can adversely affect the other. 

Make sure you get enough sleep each night. Lack of sleep can exacerbate feelings of sadness and anxiety. Aim for 7-9 hours of restful sleep to help your body and mind recover from daily stresses. 

Maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Proper nutrition can help regulate your mood and provide the energy needed to tackle daily challenges.  

Regular exercise can also be an effective way to manage stress and boost your mood; even a short daily walk can make a significant difference in how you feel. 

Establish a Routine 

Divorce can disrupt every aspect of your life, making it feel chaotic and unpredictable, so establishing a new daily routine can provide a sense of normalcy and stability. 

Start by setting a regular wake-up and bedtime. Consistent sleep patterns can help regulate your mood and improve overall well-being.  

Plan your day with activities that give you a sense of purpose and accomplishment – such as work and exercise – and be sure to set aside time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Having a structured routine can make your days feel more manageable. 

Maintain Social Connections 

It’s easy to isolate yourself during a divorce, but maintaining social connections is vital for emotional well-being. Reach out to friends and family members who can offer support, companionship, and a listening ear. 

Try to stay involved in social activities; attend gatherings, join clubs, or participate in community events that you find engaging. Being around others can provide a sense of belonging and remind you that life continues beyond divorce. 

If you feel comfortable, share your experiences with close friends or family. They can offer valuable perspectives and support that can help through tough times. 

Set Realistic Expectations 

Setting realistic expectations for yourself and the situation can prevent feelings of disappointment and frustration. Understand that healing takes time, and it’s okay to have good days and bad days. 

Don’t pressure yourself to move on quickly. Allow yourself the time and space needed to grieve the loss of the relationship and adjust to the new normal. Be patient with yourself, and recognise that it’s normal to experience a range of emotions, and it’s okay to seek help when needed. 

Create New Goals 

Divorce marks the end of one chapter, but also the beginning of a new one. Use this time to reflect on what you want for your future and set new personal and professional goals. 

Think about what makes you happy and fulfilled. This could be pursuing a new hobby, advancing in your career, or achieving personal milestones. Setting and working towards new goals can provide a sense of direction and purpose. 

Break down your goals into small, manageable steps. Celebrate your progress along the way, no matter how small it may seem. 

Seek Support Services 

Navigating a divorce can feel isolating, but remember: you don’t have to go through it alone. There are numerous support services available that can make this transition easier. 

One option is joining a support group for divorcees. These groups offer a safe space to share your experiences and learn from others who are going through or have been through a similar situation. Many people find comfort in knowing they are not alone. 

Professional therapy and counselling services are another excellent resource. A trained counsellor can help you work through your emotions, develop coping strategies, and offer guidance on moving forward. 

Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. It shows that you are taking proactive steps to care for your emotional well-being.
